Strand Books, the new home of the venerable Columbia bookstore chain, is closing down.
The store will close its doors on September 23rd.
“The decision was made by management of Strand after extensive discussions with the owners and staff,” a statement on the Strand website says.
“We feel that this is the right time to close and move on.”
The store, which was founded in 1965, has been struggling with low sales and a lack of support from its owner, who bought it from a family trust more than two decades ago.
“While this decision was difficult, it is one we made in the best interests of the business and its staff,” the statement continues.
The decision comes as the chain’s online business continues to crumble.
The company has also lost a slew of staff members.
