WASHINGTON — A New York bookstore has shut down its shelves and has shuttered its online store amid growing protests over the sale of controversial conservative author Charles Murray’s new book.
Bookstores across the country have been forced to close because of the book, which many people say contains “offensive” views on race, immigration, the environment and other topics.
The book, “Coming Apart: The State of White America, 1960-2010,” was written by Murray, an assistant professor at Harvard University.
It is scheduled for a nationwide release on Friday.
Last week, a protest at a book sale at a Boston college was broken up by police.
A spokesman for the Massachusetts chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union said the group had received a tip-off about the book and was investigating.
