A bookstore that was once a haven for the local bookseller scene is getting a big upgrade.
One of the city’s most beloved bookstores, the Ku, is going into a $20 million remodel to become one of the largest bookstores on the Eastside.
The bookstore is now called the Bookshop of Ku and will be located in the former Ku Bookstore building on Westheimer.
The building, built in 1927, is now a movie theater.
The Ku Bookshop will be completely renovated and will feature a new floorplan, an expanded section of the bookstore, and a new layout, which will allow customers to browse by topic, genre, and even order a book from the comfort of their home.
The renovation was part of a major expansion plan that the Ku Bookseller Group, which is owned by Kia Motors, launched last year to help it stay in business, said CEO Josh Brown.
“We are so proud of the new Bookshop and we are looking forward to welcoming our loyal customers back,” he said.
“The Bookshop is a great example of how to thrive as a local bookstore.”
The Bookseller of Ku will be the largest of its kind in Los Angeles.
Its current location is on West Howard Street near Hollywood Boulevard.
It will be about three blocks from the newly renovated Bookstore of Ku.
