Updated Tuesday, April 12, 2019 17:21:52 A Boulder store that sells books and other merchandise for over 200 years has shut down for the first time in its life.
Boulder Books, the Boulder-based family-owned book and music store, closed its doors in late May following the opening of a new business on its property.
The store had operated since the 1970s and is the oldest in Colorado.
In the past 18 years, the store had closed for various reasons including a legal dispute with the city, and for other business reasons.
It closed in April after the city of Boulder decided not to renew the store’s license after the shop had been in business for 17 years.
“The city had issued a notice to us in January 2018 that they were not renewing our license and that the property could not be used for a new store, and that it would not be eligible for the tax abatement,” said the store owner, Barbara Boggs.
That decision prompted the city to renew Boulder Books license in January 2019.
Barbara Boggins, left, with her daughter, Amanda, and granddaughter, Tasha.
The store closed in May after the Boulder city council decided not a renew the license of Boulder Books.
At that time, Boggons and her family decided to close the store and sell the store to a new owner.
Bogges said the new owner, who had a new lease on the building, would reopen the store.
The new owner is now considering selling the store for a profit.
She said the closure was bittersweet, and it had been difficult to watch the business slowly decline over the years.
Boggs said that the new owners have been able to save the Boulder Books store by focusing on a more niche market.
“The new owner has focused on creating something new and different and exciting for Boulder,” Boggens said.
Her daughter Amanda, who owns a business that sells hand-made crafts and other handmade items, said she is also very excited to reopen the Boulder store with her granddaughter.
When she opened the Boulder Store in 1972, the shop was one of the oldest businesses in the city and was considered the largest independent bookstore in the state, she said.
She said she would like to see Boulder Books become a thriving and thriving place to shop for handmade items and books.
With the new business being developed, Boggles said she hopes to reopen as soon as possible.
We need to see that this is not the last of this store, she added.
“Hopefully they can reopen soon.”
Boggins said that as the Boulder City Council reviews the city’s decision to renew her license, she hopes it will give her and her team the chance to continue to support her shop.
Boulder Book and Music has also closed two other Boulder stores, the First and the Second Stores.
A new Boulder Books, Boulder Books and Boulder Books & Boulder Books – Boulder bookstore is scheduled to open in late spring 2019.
